What should I expect for my first appointment?
When I first had acupuncture, I felt like I discovered the human ‘reset’ button.
So you’ve done a little research, booked your first appointment and are ready to experience acupuncture for yourself! Congratulations.
First of all, everyone experiences acupuncture a little differently. “Does it hurt?” is a common first question.
Acupuncture needles are thinner than cat whiskers! Most people feel a slight pressure and then a dull achy sensation. Some feel release of tension, tickling or a shock-like feeling that can radiate up or down extremities. Feelings of heat, cold or itching are also possible.
The first time I received acupuncture I was incredibly jet lagged and at a turning point in my life. I had just left an office job and was exploring schools in the Southwest.
Upon first receiving the pins, I could hardly feel the insertion. After some time I could feel a circulation sensation in my body, as if separate areas were becoming connected and. I closed my eyes and felt a sense of being grounded and safe in my body that was rare for me at the time. After some minutes I remember feeling a deep sense of renewal and peace. My thoughts slowed to a meditative space and slowly I noticed a change in perspective. When the acupuncture needles were removed I felt that I had been reset. My jetlag was gone, I felt optimistic and like I had just woken up from the most restorative nap of my life.
What was your first acupuncture experience like?
I would love to hear about it in the comments!
